Barbara Amos
Alberta
Biography
Barbara Amos was born at the end of the road, in a
logging camp near Kapuskasing, just a little south of James Bay. She also spent
many years in the cities of Toronto and Calgary. She graduated from the
University of Waterloo and has continued her studies at the Ontario College of
Art and the Alberta College of Art. Since then she has traveled most of Canada,
from Whitehorse to Sarnia, Victoria to Halifax. She went to other countries,
too, but kept returning to Canada.
She has worked in various paintings mediums, video and digital imagery and was recently awarded a grant to construct a prism that develops concepts of fragmentation. All of her work develops metaphors about a world that is being rearranged.
Her work is in the US Library of Congress. She has exhibited at the New York artist run centre, Exit Art Gallery, at the Williamson Gallery, Art Centre College of Design, Pasadena, CA, and in Canada her work has been shown in many public and commercial galleries from Vancouver to Montreal.
Barbara Amos has been short listed on provincial and international public art competitions, and recently completed a 90 foot work for Cardel Place in Calgary, Alberta. A recipient of grants and scholarships, she has also been active on the board of a public gallery, a national art association, and invited to participate on public art juries for the City of Calgary. She has taught through the Alberta College of Art and Red Deer College.
