Biography

Tony Bloom's career embodies remarkable versatility. Initially a ceramicist, he now works in a variety of materials - copper, bronze, steel, clay and concrete, often involving or implying movement: sound, water, wind. his sculpture ranges from small, handheld objects to monumental commissions, such as River Fragments for Calgary's Sun Life Plaza. Since the 1970's, his work has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe, and Japan, and he has been the recipient of many national, provincial and civic awards.

The sculptor is a founder of Stonecrop Studios, Canmore (1974), where he continues to create artworks that reflect his engagement with the dynamics of mental and physical play.

1998     Guest Speaker: Canadian Society of Landscape Architects annual conference

1997    6 weeks working in various studios around Greece and Crete, culminating in an exhibition in Athens.

1996    Urban Gateways, City of Ottawa; national ideas competition looking at a reworking of the approaches to Parliament Hill; 3rd prize; collaboration with Doug Carlyle, Landscape Architect

1994    Alberta-Saskatchewan Border Sculpture; Lloydminster; 4 spires 100' high; work comprises interpretive, ceremonial, and civic components; in collaboration with Doug Carlyle, Landscape Architect

1994    Water Spheres; 9 spheres up to 2 meters in diameter as entrance feature to bio-filtration marsh, City of Burnaby, British Colombia

1993    WaterWork; 5 ton water-driven kinetic sculpture for BC Hydro head office, Vancouver, British Columbia

1990    The Oliver Convergence, City of Edmonton, Alberta; Work includes 4 steel spires up to 33' and 20' waterfall; steel fountain 20' high, bronze text, and hedgerows.

1979-80  Curated "Measure for Measure", an exploration of contemporary musical instrument makers in Canada.. Based on original research, project included a magazine, as well as an exhibition and festival which toured Canada.
