Biography

Susan Gottselig spent her formative years in East Africa. She immigrated to Canada in 1974 and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. She lives and works in the mountains of Alberta and continues to be active in her community.

Susan is best known for her distinctive images which reference nature, the human figure and our relationship with the world. Her expressive work has universal appeal and conveys her passion for sculpture in molten glass.

"I have always had an intrinsic need to create - a need as essential to me as air and water. My work reflects my response to concepts and concerns that connect people and each other as well as each of us to our world. Ideas for my work arise from my personal experiences and perceptions of life, and like life, these ideas can be joyful or disturbing. I use images that reference the human figure to interpret the actions and interactions of life. Gesture and motion are of particular importance to me, and explorations in this area include expressions of the whole figure as well as components of it. I am also interested in portraying images of nature from my immediate environment in the Rocky Mountains and from my travels throughout the world."
