Rachel Boekel was raised in Canmore, and studied photography as a credit course in high school before becoming involved with Craig in the Whyte Museum's 'Through the Lens' program. Rachel pursued her new passion at the Photography and Journalism Academy in Victoria, graduating in 2003. In 2004, Rachel was recognized for her artistic excellence and commitment by the Town of Canmore, through the Mayor's Award for Arts and Culture. She was accepted as an intern for the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in New York City, and while in New York, studied at the International Centre for Photography. In 2007, Rachel and her mother took a trip to China, traveling 4000 km on the new Beijing-Lhasa railway, and traveling down the Yangtze river by boat. Rachel's images from China speak of work and beauty - focusing on the everyday lives of those she meets.
