Michael was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His interest in craftsmanship and woodworking began during his high school years. He subsequently excelled while attending the Fine Woodworking Program in Nelson, British Columbia. Michael chose the name "Joseph Carlyle Designs" to honour both of his grandfathers and that respect for his heritage is reflected in the timeless quality and attention to traditional craftsmanship of his distinctive designs.
